KARACHI: For the last two months, every bucket of chicken sold at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) raised Rs50 from the fast-food company for the Deaf Reach School.

This was a part of KFC's Mitao Bhook campaign. An event to hand over the cheque to the school was held on Wednesday in Karachi. More than Rs10 million were raised through KFC outlets all over the country. The event was attended by KFC Pakistan CEO Nigel Belton, KFC Pakistan chairperson Irfan Mustafa, KFC Pakistan operations director Haris Mustafa and the executive director of the Family Education Services Foundation, Richard Geary.

Belton thanked all the customers who made the campaign a success. "The 'Mitao Bhook' campaign was not launched to just eliminate hunger," he said. "We wanted to eliminate illiteracy and problems from the lives of aurally-handicapped people." He added that there were seven KFC outlets in the country that were run by the deaf with a total workforce of 120 hearing-impaired people.

One of their aims, he claimed was to focus on education. "We are going to launch our next partnership with The Citizens Foundation as it is Pakistan's leading non-profit organisation working towards providing better educational facilities to the youth."

Geary thanked the KFC staff and administration for their positivity. "To change society, we have to change the way people think and this is what KFC is doing," he said. Many former students of the Deaf Reach School are also employed at KFC and are earning a respectable income for their family.
