KARACHI:

Families of the victims of the Shikarpur imambargah blast ended their sit-in at Numaish Chowrangi on Thursday afternoon after the Shuhada Committee announced that their demands had been accepted by the Sindh government.

The Majlis-e-Wahadat-e-Muslimeen, who had supported the protesters, embraced the decision. “We accept the committee’s decision,” said Nadia, who lost her brothers in the blast which left 62 people dead and as many injured on January 30. “The army operation, which was our foremost demand, has been accepted. We will go back home now.”

Another protester, who lost her uncle in the blast, said that the militants wanted to scare them into leaving the country.

Families, relatives and friends of the deceased had participated in a long march from Shikarpur to Karachi with the Shuhada committee to demand an army operation in their hometown. The families left Shikarpur on Sunday and reached Karachi on Tuesday night, and organised a protest at Numaish Chowrangi.

On Thursday afternoon, the Shuhada committee announced that an apex committee, including officials from the intelligence agencies, military and law enforcement agencies, will lead an operation against militants across the province with a focus on Shikarpur. Shuhada committee chairperson Allama Maqsood Domki termed the acceptance of their demands a victory.
