KARACHI: A suspected target killer was killed on Friday as he tried to escape from police custody in Orangi Town area of Karachi.

DIG Tahir Naveed had on Thursday announced during a press conference at his office that police had apprehended Obaidur Rehman. According to police, he had confessed to killing dozens of people including policemen and doctors.

“We took him to Orangi Town as we conducted a raid to arrest his comrades. But as soon as we arrived, his companions opened fire on us,” said Surjani SHO Naveed Nasir.

“At the same time, he (Rehman) snatched a weapon from a police constable and opened fire, injuring the official before trying to escape. But fortunately or unfortunately, he was killed by firing from his own comrades,” Nasir claimed.

The SHO claimed that the suspect was associated with the banned outfit – Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan and was allegedly involved in over 60 cases of target killings including that of several MQM workers, eight police officers and doctors Ali Akbar and Yawer Hussain.

“People are blaming us for killing him (Rehman) in a fake encounter but nobody is seeing my injured constable – Bezad,” the Nasir complained. “It was a genuine raid,” he stressed.

Separately, a suspected kidnapper was killed during a surgical operation conducted by Rangers Special Task Force in Sohrab Goth area between Thursday night and Friday morning.
