A judicial magistrate in the central district has handed over a suspect, involved in the death of two persons including a woman, to police custody on two-day physical remand. The victims, a man, his sister, and a minor boy, were crushed by a dumper truck on Rashid Minhas Road.
The police had presented the suspect - Firdous - before the Judicial Magistrate.
The investigating officer informed the court that the suspect did not possess a heavy traffic vehicle licence. He only possessed an LTV (light transport vehicle) licence which had expired back in 2016, but was driving the dumper truck. The court was also informed that the suspect sustained an eye injury due to public violence following the accident. The case was registered at Yusuf Plaza police station on the complaint of the victims' uncle.
According to the preliminary report, the road was wet at the time of accident due to light rain. The motorcycle made slight contact with a passing by vehicle and slipped and came under the wheels of an approaching dumper truck.
The report acknowledges that the dumper was at a high speed and running in the fast lane. However, no clear stance has yet been taken on whether the driver was negligent or the over-speeding was the cause of the accident.
The investigation team stated that CCTV footage will be obtained to trace the number plate of the other vehicle involved and that a detailed report will follow.
Police say efforts are underway to identify the individuals involved in torching the dumper. So far, police have rounded up more than a dozen people, involved in torching the dumper.
