ISLAMABAD:

Dr Babar Awan invited censure from his counterpart in court following his surprise emergence as defence counsel for Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the defamation suit filed last week by the former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Chaudhry’s lawyer Sheikh Ashanuddin immediately raised objection over the counsel for defence, claiming that Awan had mala fide intentions against his client. Awan reminded the court that as per law everyone has a right to engage any lawyer.

Both the counsels also exchanged harsh words, forcing the court to restrain them.

Awan was the law minister in the Yousaf-Raza Gilani-led government when the former chief justice had suspended his licence to practice as a lawyer on contempt of court charges. The apex court declared Awan guilty of ridiculing the courtin Dec 2011. Later in May 2014 the court restored the licence after the retirement of Chaudhry.
