Standing tall: Building Control Authority asked to ensure stringent checks

Municipal corporation stresses need for getting maps approved by experts.

PESHAWAR:
The municipal corporation of Peshawar has asked the Building Control Authority (BCA) to follow the terms and conditions laid out for the construction of buildings.

A meeting was held on Friday to discuss how BCA could be strengthened and sanitation improved in the city where encroachments have become a common sight. The moot was chaired by Municipal Corporation Peshawar Administrator Syed Zafar Ali Shah at the corporation’s office.

Shah said maps would be made available at every construction site and should be strictly followed. He added a notice board will be put up bearing the contact information of the building’s owner, while the controller and inspector concerned would also be mentioned. In case of any violation, the inspector and building controller would be held responsible and summoned for an enquiry.

Shah said all the members of the BCA staff will have to be in their uniforms while working at the site, adding laws for construction and building would be implemented in letter and spirit. In case of illegal construction, the structure would not be demolished; instead, legal proceedings would be initiated against the concerned officials of the BCA.

Stressing on the requirement for maps, Shah said a meeting should be held with site engineers and experts in order to get the maps approved. “Only depositing fees would not get the maps approved.” Engineers of the municipal corporation will also have to attend these meetings.

An owner of local apartments, Shah Khalid, said it is easy to get maps approved at the relevant office. However, practical steps should be taken to strengthen the construction of buildings rather than only taking oral decisions. “The authority should also keep a check on the construction material.”

He said he recently got apartments built in Hayatabad, the construction procedure of which was checked by a BCA team. “It is necessary for BCA to demand details about the structure and electricity systems’ installation.”
