Testing for polio: Blood samples sent to Islamabad

MINGORA:

Blood samples of 38 children were sent for polio tests to Islamabad on Monday by the Swat district health officer.

The samples were collected during a polio campaign in Swat. The campaign kicked off in Swat after two polio cases surfaced last month, Expanded Programme on Immunisation in charge Dr Fazal Elahi told The Express Tribune.

“The drive is being carried out smoothly and no resistance has come from anywhere,” he said, adding he was quite sure the virus would be completely eradicated from the district. Dr Elahi appealed to the public to cooperate with the immunising teams so that the virus can be eradicated at the earliest. “The only treatment for polio is advanced inoculation,” he said.

According to health officials, 449,000 children will be vaccinated in all 65 union councils of the district during the drive. A total of 1,209 teams, including 1,083 mobile, 86 fixed and 40 transit teams, are taking part in the campaign.
