Akhlaque, a Russian citizen and a Pakistani national, was among the four convicts involved in an attack on former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, who were hanged earlier today.
Akhlaque was given death penalty by a military court in 2005. However, his execution was not carried out due to a moratorium on death penalty since 2008.
A few days ago, the ban on capital punishment was lifted in the wake of a barbaric attack on an army-run school in Peshawar that left at least 148 people, including 132 children dead.
A statement issued in Islamabad by the Russian Embassy said the Russian side had repeatedly approached the Pakistani authorities with a plea to reconsider the sentence of Akhlaque on humanitarian grounds.
“The Russian Embassy in Islamabad and the Russian citizen’s lawyers were making efforts to postpone carrying out the sentence,” the statement added.
The statement noted that according to the information from the Ministry of Interior, Akhalque along with his three accomplices were executed in Faisalabad.

@vijay: Helping Russia is also helping ourself! Some trade items are still allowed you know? India is currently helping "Under Embargo" Iran, by buying fuel & other stuff from them. Or you call it cheaper fuel source? Modi just gave several billion dollar contracts to Russia from construction to arms, that would help her too, no? Russia already has billions of dollars invested in Pak, they need to check that! Why you guys just don't "mind your own Business"?
I am in favour of Pakistan giving capital punishment to terrorist but it should be given by civil court. I fail to understand what is a role of military court in democracy. Innocent person can't defend them self in a military court.
@bahaha: "After a very long time the Pakistani people were looking forward to the helping Russia get over the “embargoes”. What a joke. Pakistani should first try to help them self in coming out of economic mess this are in. Pakistan takes aid from same people who have put embargoes on Russia so how Pakistan can help Russia?
@Singh: Pakistan Russia friendship blooms because of the military hardware they sold us this year, lofting decades of military embargo on pakistan, completely ignoring Indian protests .
Have the Russians already forgotten what it took to defeat the militant Chechens ?
Sadly, Pakistan may have executed innocent people. The Musharraf assassination attempt was very likely stage-managed by the agencies as part of Musharraf's double-game of running with the hares and hunting with the hounds game. At a time when the US and the West were getting weary of Mush's double-games, he wanted to prove that because of his actions against anti-west Taliban, they were trying to assassinate him. To make it look authentic, the agencies caught four guys and charged them with the "crime".
@a&a:
"Russia should be thankful to Pakistan…."
I totally agree. This terrorist, if sent back to Russia, was sure to kill Russians as part of Chechen Jihad. I am sure he is very anti-Russian.
@krupasindhu sarangi: Reading too much of Garuda Puranam? Would you suggest what should those more barbaric measures be?
Come on Russia, one less of them is for the betterment for the world and the rest.
we consider RUSSIA our friend, but i want to ask my russians friends that if these people are allowed to escape free, they will go and join islamic movement of uzbekistan ansd will kill more russians. long live pak.russia friendship.
A terrorist will remain a terrorist, no matter what nationality he holds.
Justice is provided by the courts on the basis of nature of crime committed.
@OurManYourMan: Long live Pak-Russia friendship Until recently most of you was claiming i.e Pakistan defeated world power Russia & cut it into pieces. All of sudden from where this mushroom of friendship bloom? ET don't censor
@OurManYourMan: Long live Pak-Russia friendship When it was started? It is news.
No one considers our requests for clemency of our citizens. No one has the right to ask us to consider mercy petitions in such cases.
Please ask Russian ambassador if they will ever spare an individual involved in attack on their President? If anyone wants to get information on Russian imprisonment, please carry out search for Russian jails on youtube.com.
How about bringing down a civilian Aircraft in Ukraine.Would u like to hand over the criminals to Malasia.Come on Shutup.
Russia should be thankful to Pakistan....
What Russian talking about, they killed there own people worse then execution.
Why reconsider? A Russian terrorist is as much a terrorist as one belonging to Pakistan or Afghanistan for that matter.
The fact that these animals were a burden on our tax payers and were able to get food while people in Thar died of malnutrition is a fact everyone should remember. We cant afford to have these 1000s of murderers chewing on our resources.
Pakistan has had enough. One of the rare moments when I as a Pakistani feel proud my country did not succumb to the pressures of a G8 state.
I hope the Russian protest was just routine and not anything from the "heart"; if it was then nobody will take Russian friendship initiatives seriously. After a very long time the Pakistani people were looking forward to the helping Russia get over the "embargoes".
Sorry, we just hung our Pak origin man for crime against the State. So much for fruit of Indian-Russian friendship of past. Also, It's too late sir. He wasn't good for you either. His "love for land" brought him home. Pak citizens get chopped in Saudi Kingdom too, we don't mind. I say: Good riddance! Long live Pak-Russia friendship!
Only one question for any country that is asking for not hanging their citizen, what would you do in these cases?
