Cleansing process: 19 policemen dismissed from service

As many as 72 punished for misconduct.

ISLAMABAD: At least 19 police officials have been dismissed from services and many others have been awarded punishments for corrupt practices.

The action against 72 policemen has been taken by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Asmatullah Junejo.  The SSP issued show-cause notices to 172 policemen and sought explanation from them on Saturday and Sunday. He issued the orders while hearing appeals of 158 policemen from the rank of constable to inspector.



Punishments range from dismissal from service, reduction in ranks, stopping increment, extra drills, forfeiture of service and censure on charges of negligence from duty, misuse of authority, poor performance, corruption and misconduct.

“This is not a charity organisation. No negligence can be tolerated as we have the responsibility to protect life and property of citizens,” said Junejo. Checks and balances keep things in balance, he observed.

The SSP said that officials were issued show-cause notices right after they were accused of any negligence, inefficiency, corruption and mismanagement, adding that a final action was taken after they explained their position and couldn’t clear their position. Only 37 policemen filed proper replies and were able to clear charges against them, he added.

Cases of five inspectors and a sub-inspector have been referred to DSPs with directions to submit inquiry report in three days.

Junejo said, such actions should be taken once a month by the high-ups, adding that he has been taking such actions every fortnight.

Nine officials of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) have also been dismissed.

Two ASIs of the Bhara Kahu police station have been demoted to head constables while 39 officials of different police station censured; 42 cases are pending for action.

Separately, 25 personnel of the ICT police were found involved in corruption and have been sidelined or punished since June 1, 2013 till December 5, 2014, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, revealed in the National Assembly while answering a question.

Out of these 25 men, 15 were dismissed from services, four got reduction in ranks one was given compulsory retirement, another got stoppage of increment for three years and a constable’s 10 days salary was deducted.
