CID arrests five al Qaeda suspects in Karachi

10kg of explosives and weapons recovered were also recovered

KARACHI:
The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Karachi police on Thursday arrested five al Qaeda suspects from Old Haji Camp area of Napier in Karachi during a targeted raid.

According to CID Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) in charge DSP Ali Raza, the group's local commander Asad Khan, along with Shahid Usman, Fawad Khan, Shahid Ansari and Usman had been arrested.

Raza said the group was operating an al Qaeda cell from Karachi, adding that they were also involved in various criminal activities.


Officials claimed they had recovered 10 kilogrammes of explosives along with weapons from the suspects.

Earlier on December 9, the man who prepared a suicide bomber for the 2007 Karsaz blast on former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in a police encounter in Karachi on Monday.

During a Crime Investigation Department encounter in Manghopir, Firdos Khan, who was affiliated with the defunct Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Mehsood group, was killed.

However, his accomplices managed to flee from the scene.
