A party that rebuked previous shutdowns in Karachi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is all set to close the port city today as part of its countrywide Azadi march’s Plan C.
The shutdown will kick off on Friday morning and will end by the evening, with PTI chief Imran Khan expected to address at one of the 10 or 11 sit-in locations. Khan is expected to land in Karachi by late afternoon.
The PTI local leaders have divided the areas among themselves. Khurram Sher Zaman, who will be overseeing the sit-in at Teen Talwar said he will start the protest early morning. “I will be coming out to participate in the sit-in right after Fajr,” he said.
The Hasan Square in-charge, Arsalan Ghumman, said they will not force any shopkeeper to shut down their businesses. “We are a peaceful party and we will make sure that our protests remain peaceful.” Apart from requesting security from the government, the party is relying on their own workers to carry out snap-checks of suspicious persons.
The party also held smaller rallies on Thursday evening. PTI leader Arif Alvi said the consequences will not be good if a Faisalabad-like situation develops here.
Meanwhile, Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah has assured that full security will be provided to Imran Khan and the sit-ins today. He was addressing a press conference at CM House accompanied by information minister Sharjeel Memon. “We have made arrangements for more security for Imran Khan than provided to the chief minister,” said Shah.
Shah added that the Pakistan Peoples Party government was not against peaceful strikes and protests but asked the PTI workers to refrain from activities that would create a law and order situation in the city. He added that the PTI leadership had given a list of 23 dharna sites for approval but the government had only agreed to nine of them.
On the other hand, Memon reminded that it was normal to shut down some roads two days before the Chehlum procession, hinting that the routes of the procession may be closed for public on Friday.
However, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said PTI has a right to protest. “Imran Khan is welcome to hold protests, sit-ins, and rallies in Karachi,” said MQM chief Altaf Hussain in a statement. “My only appeal is that they keep their demonstrations peaceful.”
Massive traffic gridlock
The traffic police fear a massive gridlock on the main thoroughfares today. Around 1,100 traffic police officials and wardens will be on duty to maintain the traffic situation from 7am. “We will definitely give alternative routes to avoid any inconvenience to the residents,” said traffic police DIG Dr Ameer Shaikh. “We have appealed to them [PTI] to at least spare Sharae Faisal.”
Karachi police chief AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo said they will provide foolproof security to the PTI leaders and the protesters. The traders and shopkeepers are the only authority to decide whether or not the businesses will close, he said. “If anyone tries to forcefully shut down the businesses, the police will not leave them and will register cases against them.”
The traders have, however, decided to defy the shutdown call and keep their businesses open. Jameel Ahmed Paracha, the chairperson of Sindh Tajir Ittehad, told The Express Tribune that they have received threats from people claiming to be PTI activists. “The traders will not tolerate any hooliganism,” he said. “This culture of forced strikes will ultimately engulf the city of lights.”
For Karachi Transport Ittehad president Irshad Bukhari, the decision to bring vehicles on roads will largely depend on the security arrangements being made by the law enforcement agencies since midnight. “We want to ply the public transport on roads tomorrow but we do not want to see our vehicles being damaged or burnt.”
The associations of the private schools in the city have also showed inclination to keep the educational institutions open on Friday. “We have asked the school administrations to decide on their own, keeping in view the law and order situation in their respective areas,” said Syed Khalid Shah, the chairperson of the All Private Schools’ Management Association.
Likewise, academic activities at the University of Karachi, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Dow University of Health Sciences, Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Institute of Business Administration, Institute of Business Management, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology, will be held as per routine. Later in the evening, Sindh education minister also issued a statement that all public and private schools, colleges and universities will remain open today.

Naya Pakistan: In which we all will marry a foreigner. We all will send our children abroad for education. Nor bad as a change! But what will I do as I am already married and my children are getting education here in Pakistan.
We should love Pakistan only and not with taritors who are trying to destablize country. IK had a better chance to become PM by improving governace in KPK but he failed there as situation is KPK is ever worst in history. God save us from taritors.
GO NAWAZ GO.... If you win election fairly then why you hide to recount of vote ????
Hey PTI! I managed to reach work despite your dharnas!
All the best! #DoSomethingProductive
I have arrived office because I reject this Dharna politics.
Go Imran Go.
@Amir: This is not twitter. Why do you people use hashtags here?
No trust on this man who always takes U Turn. PTI’s strategy is to only create agitation and political instability in the country. Immature and dirtiest politics of PTI. This dirty politics is being backed by Establishment.
Where is that new KPK that was to be built in 90 days? Now a year is gone but there is no new KPK. Imran can only blame and abuse others. On the other hand, PTIs performance in KPK is the poorest as compared to other provinces. If Shahbaz Sharif is appointed CM of KPK, I am sure things will start becoming better.
No sane man can vote for PTI that is led by Sultan Rahi of politics. He is continuously busy in giving threats to Judiciary, Election Commission, Election Tribunals, Federal Government and Policemen. I have never listened anything good from the mouth of Imran Khan. He always uses loose language for others.
All economic indicators in the country are improving. I appreciate the performance of present federal government during last one year. If this government continues for 5 years, it will be very good for Pakistan and democracy. I think thumbs should be up for the government. Inflation is also coming down. Stock exchange is improving. There is much reduction in suicide attacks.
It is only Pakistan where immature politicians like Imran Khan don’t accept defeat. Imran lacks sportsman spirit. He possesses very little heart. His short-sightedness and narrow-mindedness are his main weaknesses.
@Amir: I think Imran Khan is losing a lot of the "love" he once inspired. He sounds more and more like a sore loser who is just arrogant, stubborn and has no care for the country. He seems to be willing to destabilize the whole country in his zeal to become the leader. Rather than work within the imperfect system the world calls democracy, he is obsessed with an Arab Spring revolt. the majority of people I know reject such calls for anarchy and only have to look at Libya, Syria, Egypt or Iraq to see the risks that result from mob rule over working within the system.
There is nothing truth in Imran’s speeches. He is always busy in character assassination of Nawaz Sharif. On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif has never talked about character of Imran Khan. Allah bless Nawaz Sharif who is the only hope for Pakistan.
2013 elections were conducted by independent Election Commission in the presence of independent Judiciary. Mr. Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim was nominated by Imran Khan. Nawaz Sharif was not agreed on this nomination. It was Imran's demand to appoint judges as Returning Officer that was also accepted. Entire election was conducted as per the conditions of Imran Khan. PML-N contested elections like other parties. Elections were not conducted by PML-N. Imran is a confused person. His workers are even not clear about his agenda. His demand of PM’s resignation is un-constitutional. Nawaz Sharif has done nothing wrong.
A man who is not sincere with his real daughter; how can he be sincere with Pakistanis.
Go Imran Go. Stay Nawaz Stay.
I am disappointed from the role of media. IK want to destroy the economy but media is posing him as a hero. 10 to 20 people are present in his Dharna in Islamabad and his speech full of abuses is live telecasted by TV channels. This man is creating anarchy in Pakistan and Media is playing the equal role in this regard.
Imran Khan has become a cancer for Pakistan. Its treatment is not available even in Shoukat Khanum Hospital.
Nothing can be rebuilt by shutdown. Shame for PTI and its leadership.
People have to reach airport, railway station, hospitals etc. Everyone will abuse PTI who will suffer due to this baseless protest of PTI.
@Amir: Why PTI is creating problems for patients, travelers, kids, businesses etc? I think PTI is doing so because general public did not vote for PTI in 2013 elections. Hence they are punished. It is 100% sure that PTI will get even bitter defeat in the next elections due to their dirty Dharna style politics.
Why blocking roads to disturb the public? Why PTI is punishing the general public? PTI should do Dharna in some parks. They should not disturb the general public.
PTI trying desperately to save its drowning ship. By gathering few hundreds Karachi won't come to halt.
If there was any difference between PTI and MQM, it will disappear today. I think these burgers will destroy everything first before they start building Naya Pakistan.
No 'forced' closure. Only closing roads. So people can't get to work and students can't get to schools/unis. Rest will stay home for the fear of something bad happening. Recipe for a successful "shutdown'. However, this is 'different' from MQM strike. People just love Imran Khan so much they don't care if it creates problems for patients, travelers, kids with exams, businesses. etc.. #Shutdown#
