MINGORA: A village defence committee (VDC) member was critically injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on him in front of the Central Hospital at Saidu Sharif, Swat on Tuesday.

According to Mingora police, Gul Sazan, a resident of Qalagey in Kabal tehsil, had taken his family to the hospital for medical checkup when some unidentified assailants suddenly opened fire on them, leaving Sazan critically injured.

While there were reports that Sazan was a VDC member, security officials refused to acknowledge his membership and claimed that he had been attacked because of personal enmity.

Soon after the incident, police conducted raids to apprehend the culprits and arrested two suspects identified as Muhammad Iqbal and Barkat.

The suspects were detained for further investigation.

Local residents have questioned the security condition in the area, terming Tuesday’s incident a matter of serious concern.
