Raids and rescues: 'Militant leader' killed in Baldia Town
Six kidnapping victims rescued, five suspects arrested in separate incident.
KARACHI:
A suspected militant leader was killed in a raid in the outskirts of the city on Tuesday, while police also claimed to have rescued six kidnapping victims and arrested five suspects in separate incidents across the city.
A suspected local leader of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was reportedly killed during a joint raid conducted by the police and the Rangers in Raees Goth within the limits of Saeedabad police station in Baldia Town. Police officials claimed that the encounter took place when the police carried out a raid on a militant hideout after receiving a tip-off but were met with gunfire. The police fired back and killed a militant, later identified as Ameer Abdullah, son of Abdul Qadir.
According to the police, Abdullah was the TTP commander for Ittehad Town and was associated with the Khan Zaman Mehsud group of the TTP. They said that a hand grenade and a pistol were seized from his possession, adding that at least three of his companions managed to escape under the cover of fire. District West SSP Irfan Baloch said that Abdullah had been involved in various incidents of terrorism in Karachi.
Meanwhile, the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), in collaboration with the police, rescued six kidnapped persons from captivity during a raid near Northern Bypass in Manghopir late on Monday night. CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy said that Kashif Rahmen, Rehan, Khurram, Salman, Wajid and Feroz, all of whom worked for Balochistan Wheels Limited, were going home from the factory when their vehicle was intercepted by armed gunmen. He added that they were seemingly kidnapped for ransom but the police managed to trace them within three hours, before the kidnappers could make any demands. He said that although all the abductees were rescued safely, the kidnappers managed to flee. A case has been registered.
Separately, the Anti-Violent Crime Cell police claimed to have apprehended three alleged kidnappers after an encounter near Hub Chowki. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning.
In another incident, two suspected target killers were arrested during a raid in Landhi. Police officials said that the Mobin and Sheraz were involved in the murder of Iqbal, a trader from Landhi.
