Stop persecution: Petition seeks protection of minorities
A petition seeking protection for minorities in accordance with law has been filed.
LAHORE:
Lahore High Court (LHC) sought a reply on Thursday from the chief secretary and the IGP on a petition seeking protection for minorities in accordance with law.
Petitioner Javed Gill told the court the Supreme Court of Pakistan had directed provincial governments to provide protection to minorities but the recent killing of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan showed that the Punjab government had failed to do that.
Gill said fundamental rights protected by the Constitution had been infringed due to the persecution of minorities and failure of the state to protect them.
He told the judge that minorities had been assaulted many times. This included the recent lynching of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan, he said.
He said the Christians had been making due contribution to progress and development of the country. They had rendered good services in education and health sectors without any discrimination, he said.
He requested the court to direct the authorities concerned to implement the Supreme Court’s verdict and effectively grant minorities their rights.
The judge sought a reply from the government until next week.
Identification parade
Yalmas Ghani, a judicial magistrate of the Cantt Courts, sent Hussain Mustafa Khar to jail on Thursday for an identification parade. Khar is among four people accused of robbery. The identification parade will be supervised by a judicial magistrate. Defence-A police had registered a case against Khar and three others for snatching a phone, and money from the complainant. The complainant will pick out the culprits from the identification parade.
