KARACHI: The Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) will stage the biggest local tournament in its history as Servis Tyres XVs League kicks-off on Sunday with four matches in Bahawalpur, Punjab.

This is the first time that the national rugby league will feature 18 teams and 400 players in the competition. The number of teams has more than quadrupled from last year's four.

According to national rugby coach Rizwan Malk, the league will be crucial in not only promoting the sport but also in finding new talent for the national side.

“It’s the first time there will be a full 15-a-side league in the country,” Malik told The Express Tribune. “It’s a big achievement for the PRU. This will improve the standard of competition as well since our players need more matches and tournaments to play.

“The aim of this league is to bring out the best talent in the country for the national side. In fact, this is the only league that will be taking place in so many different cities across the country.”

The matches will take place in Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan and Lodran.

“Rugby is going in the right direction in Pakistan,” added Malik.

The teams set to feature in the event are Islamabad Jinns, Lahore DHA Wild Bears, Multan Wolves, RYK Green Bears, Lodran Spartans, AIT Rugby Club, Bahawalnagar Desert Camels, Muzaffargarh Rugby Club, Vihari Rugby Club , Bahawalnagar Rugby Club , Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Club, Fata Rugby Club, Punjab University, University of Lahore,  Lahore School of Economics, Fast University, University of Sargodha and Lahore University of Management & Sciences.
