No threat found: Sepa cleared Karachi nuclear plants
The court had issued on October 16 a temporary stay order restraining work to begin on the power plants
KARACHI:
The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) has said that it has approved environmental impact assessment (EIA) for two nuclear power plants being built in Karachi by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in accordance with relevant laws. The agency stated this in its comments filed to the Sindh High Court in response to court notice on a petition against construction of the two power plants due to alleged violation of the environmental laws. The court had issued on October 16 a temporary stay order, restraining the PAEC from starting work on the two nuclear power plants. It had also issued notices to the respondents, including the PAEC, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Sepa, Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency and the provincial environment and alternative energy department to file their comments. The petition was jointly filed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Dawood Hoodbhoy and others.
