LAHORE:

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday that there were vast reserves of coal in the Punjab and the government had formulated a plan to use local coal for power generation.

He was speaking to a delegation of the China Machinery Engineering Corporation.  A proposal to establish coal-fired power plants in the Salt Range was also reviewed in the meeting. The delegation members expressed keen interest in the proposal and it was decided to operate these plants with local coal. Sharif welcomed the delegation’s initiative. He said the project would be quickly completed in a transparent fashion.  Sharif said the introduction of state-of-the-art mining methods would result in increased coal production.

He said a suitable site for the project had been identified. The chief minister said civic amenities like electricity grids and transmission lines were present near the site.

He said the government had formulated a strategy to supply the power plants with local coal urgently.

He asked the delegation to ensure that the company devised a plan to complete the project in record time. Sharif said increased coal mining could potentially provide the people with a new source of livelihood.

He said China was an all-weather friend of Pakistan and was assisting the country in scores of different sectors.  The chief minister said cooperation between the government and Chinese companies would cement the Sino-Pak relationship.

China Machinery Engineering Corporation Vice-President Li Jingkai said the company would quickly complete the project.  He said the corporation was rich in expertise regarding coal mining and power generation. Jingkai said the corporation would extend all possible assistance to the government regarding mining.
