Kashmir issue left unmentioned in United Nations

Pakistan has objected to the exclusion of Kashmir from a list of disputes under the observation of the Security Council as mentioned by the UK's top diplomat in an annual debate on UNSC reforms.

Speaking at a UN General Assembly session discussing the functioning and reform of the Security Council, Pakistan's acting envoy to UN, Amjad Hussain Sial, said the Jammu and Kashmir dispute was not mentioned in the context of unresolved long-running situations.

He hoped this was an inadvertent omission, saying, "we understand this was an inadvertent omission, as Jammu and Kashmir is one of the oldest disputes on agenda of the Security Council."

Speaking earlier at the General Assembly, the UK envoy to the UN, Mark Lyall Grant, said that "some long-running situations, including in the Middle East, Cyprus and Western Sahara remain unresolved, as do issues where the Council has become engaged in recent years, including Nepal and Guinea Bissau."

"Huge challenges remain in Sudan, Somalia and the DRC," he added.

The session was organised by the United Kingdom as it holds the presidency of the Security Council this month. Pakistan has been asking the UN to intervene to help resolve the issue but India has always maintained that it has to be resolved bilaterally between the two countries and without mediation of third party.

Saba | 13 years ago | Reply Hold a plebiscite instead of threatenign to stop water coming into Pakistan. We all know India cannot pull that trick in the 21st century. It has to maintain a facade of a non-voilent country (!?!) that produced Gandhi. Also, I'm sure it does not want to invite world condemnation. Proposing such a thing is not only childish but also hampers intellectual debate. Hopefully sense will prevail.
Ahmer Ali | 13 years ago | Reply Assalam-o-Allaikum Warahmatullah. Now there's any silver lining in the dark clouds left to resolve Kashmir issue according to the UN charter when UNO has discharged Kashmir issue from UN charter? This UN's attitude has clearly defined that UNO is only the protector of non-muslim world related countries and there's no importance of muslim countries in UNO.Now the muslim world must be reunited on their own platform and make more and more stronger to OIC to resolve their disputes with the non-muslim nations with bravery and courage.
