FAISALABAD:

Police claimed on Monday to have killed a robber and to have arrested another after a shootout near Ghulamabad.

City Police Officer (CPO) Dr Sohail Habib Tajik told reporters that Nishatabad police were alerted that two robbers, riding a motorcycle, had snatched Rs36,000 and an ATM card from a man, Muhammad Arshad, near Riazul Jannah and had fled towards Ghulamabad late on Saturday night.

“A police contingent, headed by Nishatabad SHO Nadeem Anjum, was sent to the scene and started chasing the robbers. They ordered them to surrender, but the robbers instead started firing shots at the police and took cover in the nearby fields,” Tajik said.

“The police party shot back and one of the robbers was hit in the neck and died on the spot. His accomplice too was injured and was arrested by police,” the CPO said.

He said the deceased had been identified as Lahori. “The injured suspect has been identified as Muhammad Nadeem, a resident of Liaqat Chowk, Ghulam Muhammadabad,” he said.

Tajik said that both had been wanted for street crimes.

“Police also recovered cash and two pistols from them,” he said.

The CPO also announced cash prizes and appreciation letters for the police party.
