BAHAWALPUR: Family members of a man, earlier killed in a police encounter, claimed on Monday that police had arrested and then murdered him.

Rizwan was shot dead on August 6 by police, who claimed that he was fleeing after snatching a motorbike.

Munawar Ali, Rizwan’s father, told reporters that his son was already in police custody when he was murdered. “Samma Satta SHO Mehar Jabbar arrested my son, who was an intermediate student, on July 13. They beat him up and then they murdered him in a fake encounter 25 days later,” Ali said. Ali said that the SHO received Rs80,000 from their rivals to murder Rizwan. “Rizwan was innocent. There were no cases against him,” he said.

Ali appealed to the chief minister and the IG to order an investigation into Rizwan’s murder.

Rehan Gillani, a spokesman for the Bahawalpur DPO, told The Express Tribune that Rizwan had fired shots on a police team after he snatched a motorcycle and was killed when they returned fire. He said that Rizwan was wanted in several cases.
