KARACHI:

Police authorities have been restrained from registering any new FIR against a director of the University of the Karachi (KU) till August 18 by the Sindh High Court (SHC).

The bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, also summoned the complainant, Shahim, who had earlier registered a theft case against Qazi Zafar Abbas, the varsity's finance director. Last month, the KU management had approached the high court against the alleged detention of its finance director by the law enforcement agencies.

Abbas had left home for the university at around 9am on July 24, along with his driver in his car bearing registration number GL-7612, the court was informed in an application filed with the SHC chief justice. The varsity had pleaded the court take notice of the incident and order the law enforcers to release the director.

On Friday, Inspector Habib Ali filed the statement of the Anti-Violence Crime Cell and Crime Investigation Agency's SSP. The bench observed that the statement reflected that Qazi Zafar Abbas was not involved or required in any case of the AVCC or the CIA.

The bench directed the investigation officer to ensure that the complainant of the FIR, Shamim, appeared in court on the next date of hearing.

Meanwhile, the bench issued notice to the East Zone DIG to appear in person on August 18. "Till then, no FIR shall be registered against the petitioner or his family members," ordered the two judges. They also ordered that the copy of the order be sent to the IG and all the DIGs of Karachi, who shall communicate the same to all the SSPs.
