PESHAWAR: Two motorcyclists who are on a cross country tour to raise awareness about cancer reached Peshawar on Monday, travelling 2,392 kilometers. The motorcyclists, Mukaram Tareen and Iqbal Ghangla, hailing from Multan, visited the Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (IRNUM).

“It took us 12 days to reach Peshawar and from here we will go to Rawalpindi on Tuesday and visit the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) before moving to Mianwali and end the tour in Multan on November 11,” Tareen told the Express Tribune.

Tareen said that during their tour they visited cancer patients and their attendants in different hospitals across the country and also talked to school and college students to raise awareness about cancer.

He also said that the programme was jointly sponsored by the Cancer Society Multan and the Pakistan Cancer Care Welfare Society.

The motorcyclists said that they started their campaign from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi on October 28 by visiting various hospitals.

“We will travel around 2,900 kilometers in 15 days to raise awareness about cancer among the people and also meet patients and attendants in cancer hospitals,” Ghangla said, adding this tour was the first of its kind to raise awareness about cancer in the country.

Tareen said that he belonged to a feudal family, while Ghangla is a businessman.

“We are doing this campaign on voluntary basis and on our own expenses,” Tareen said. The tour costs them Rs65,000.

They had done tours for the promotion of tourism in the past, however, now they only do charity tours.
