‘Disturbing the peace’: Employer lands in jail for beating rebel child maid

The girl’s legs, arm and hand have been fractured, doctors confirmed.

MULTAN:

A medical report released on Tuesday confirmed that a domestic help, who had been beaten up by her employers on Thursday, had four fractures on her arm, hand and legs. The employer was sent on judicial remand on Tuesday after the report was presented in court.

Bahauddin Zakariya police said that they received a phone call from 40-year-old Muhammad Saeed, a resident of Gulshan Mehar Colony, on Thursday night that he had caught a woman trying to kidnap his four-year-old daughter. When police arrived at his house, the ‘woman’ turned out to be a 15-year-old girl who had been beaten to an inch of her life. Police said that her hair was shorn, her clothes ripped and she was bleeding from various cuts and bruises.

Police said they took her into custody. Initial investigations revealed that Humaira, the girl, was a maid at Saeed’s house. She said that her employers had punished her for trying to incite children working as domestic help at Saeed and his relatives’ houses to demand fair wages and better treatment. Police said that they also spoke to Saeed’s four-year-old daughter who said she was friends with the maid

Humaira said that she had been trying to persuade servants in the area to refuse to work for meagre salaries. She said that she was trying to get them to protest against the beatings they would get over small issues.

She said Saeed and 20 of his relatives lived in Gulshan Mehar Colony. She said they were furious with her when they found out that she was leading a rebellion among the domestic helpers.

After hearing Humaira’s version, the police arrested Saeed who later confessed. Police said that he told them that Humaira had been “disturbing the peace of their homes”. He said that he had never hit another servant in his life.

Humaira was taken to Nishtar Hospital where doctors confirmed that her right arm and hand had been fractured as were her legs.

Assault over land

On Tuesday, around 15 people attacked the mother and daughter, who were living on disputed land in Patti Gaadi. The suspects chopped Alam Mai’s leg off with an axe and fractured the mother’s arm. A case has been filed against the men with Jampur Cantt police station.

They asked them to leave the house and withdraw their case. They also threatened to damage their crops if they did not do so. The chief minister has taken notice of the incident and asked the Dera Ghazi Khan RPO to present a report on it. Jampur Cantt police have arrested five men and three women suspects and are looking for the rest.
