Policeman clubbed to death during raid

Several women on Thursday clubbed to death an assistant sub inspector (ASI) of Garh Maharaja police station during a he led raid to arrest a proclaimed offender (PO) in Garh Fateh Shah.


City Police Officer (CPO) Dr Haidar Ashraf told newsmen that ASI Rehmat Ali received a tip-off that proclaimed offender Jaffar Ali was hiding in a house in Garh Fateh Shah.

The CPO said when the police entered the house, the women inside attacked the policemen with clubs and sticks and threw stones at them. Sagheer Ali, an eyewitness, told newsmen that in the commotion, Ali left the house and hid in a field nearby.

He said later, the police surrounded the field and arrested the proclaimed offender.

He said as the police was taking him to the police van, some women from the house reached the fields and attacked policemen with sticks and clubs and rescued Ali from the police. The CPO said ASI Rehmat Ali received serious injuries and taken to farmhouse of Iqbal Ahmed, a land lord. He said the policemen tried to treat their colleague but his condition worsened. The CPO said the ASI was taken to Kanjwani Health Centre where he died.  The CPO said later, Garh SHO Malik Sanaullah returned to the house with a heavy contingent of the police but the criminal escaped by then.
