KARACHI: Pakistan’s duo of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Sajjad failed to defend their World Team Championship crown as they were beaten 5-3 by Hong Kong in the 2nd International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) World Team Championship final in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

The new world champion side consisted of Lee Chun Wai and Fung Kwok Wai, who saw off the challenge from Pakistani players.

It was Hong Kong who took an early lead in the finale going 2-0 up at one stage but Pakistan remained in the hunt and at one stage were back in the game making it 3-2.

Pakistan then were able to level the best of nine frames match at 3-3 but could not keep up when it mattered most as Hong Kong won two consecutive games to win 5-3.

Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association President Alamgir Sheikh said that Pakistan could have won the match if they tried harder but it was still a great show from the team.

“Pakistan could have won the world team championship again but it wasn’t meant to be ours this time,” Sheikh told The Express Tribune from Egypt.

“Yet both Asif and Sajjad put on a splendid performance in the tournament as they won some great matches.

“It turned out to be a contest between two of the best sides as Hong Kong came unbeaten as well and went onto win the final.”

Sheikh added that the consistency shown by the cueists is heartening for Pakistan. They have been able to do well and reach semi-finals and finals of major tournaments at both junior and senior levels.

He stressed that players should be supported even if they lose because Asif and Sajjad gave everything they had to win the title again for the country.

“Though the team has lost today, I feel we need to back them because they are the ones who will deliver again in the future,” Sheikh concluded.

Earlier, Pakistan had stormed into final after brushing aside a strong side of Iran 4-1 with scores of 27-87, 27-79, 42-75, 81-01 and 47-53.
