JCP meeting: 3 Shariat Court judges’ appointment endorsed
Tenure of Justice Dr Fida Muhammad Khan also extended.
ISLAMABAD:
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the names of two former superior court judges and the current head of a bar association as Federal Shariat Court judges, officials said on Thursday.
The nine-member commission also approved the job extension of Justice Dr Fida Muhammad Khan of the Shariat Court, officials told The Express Tribune.
The commission approved the appointment of former Islamabad High Court’s Justice (retd) Riaz Ahmad Khan, former Lahore High Court judge Justice (retired) Sheikh Najmul Hassan and Balochistan High Court Bar Association president Zahoor Ahmad Shahwani for the Federal Shariat Court.
FSC Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan sent the recommendation for the extension and three appointments to the commission. Now the JCP will send its proposals to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges’ Appointment for approval.
According to Article 203C of the Constitution, FSC shall consist of not more than eight Muslim judges, including the Chief Justice and Ulema judges.
Prominent jurist Tariq Mahmood, while talking to The Express Tribune, urged the FSC to dispose of all criminal cases.
He mentioned the Riba (usury) case that was given back to the Shariat Court by the Supreme Court in 2002 to reconsider its judgment delivered in 1992.
The senior lawyer demanded the 22-year-old matter be decided immediately as it raises serious questions about the pendency of matters in the FSC.
