Ongoing struggle: One-day polio campaign concludes in Peshawar

A one-day vaccination campaign was conducted in Peshawar on Sunday wherein 0.7 million children were administered polio drops with financial assistance from Saudi Arabia.


Talking to The Express Tribune, District Polio Control Room Focal Person Dr Ikram Shah said after the government’s Sehat Ka Insaf campaign against nine diseases, five samples taken from Larama and Shaheen Muslim Town union councils (UC) of the city came out clean.

He said in order to ensure complete eradication of polio, it was decided that one-day polio immunisation campaigns would be conducted in Charsadda, Peshawar and Bara, Khyber Agency with financial assistance from Saudi Arabia.

He said the campaigns were successfully completed in Charsadda and Bara on Saturday.

Shah said the campaign in the provincial capital initially planned to target 0.75 million children but officials were only able to inoculate around 0.7 million in 96 UCs of Peshawar.

Dr Shah added that during Sunday’s campaign, 2,400 teams of health workers, teachers and workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf participated and were provided security by 5,700 security personnel. He added motorcycle riding was also banned in the district temporarily.

He said during campaigns in the southern districts of the province, health officials plan to immunise children from North Waziristan Agency who have recently fled the tribal areas fearing a military operation.

He added the law enforcement agencies have been directed to tighten security across the province.
