JAMRUD:

As many as 60 tribesmen were arrested after security forces imposed an unannounced curfew in several areas of Jamrud tehsil, Khyber Agency on Saturday.

Jamrud Assistant Political Agent (APA) Roshan Khan Mehsud said the security forces and officials of the political administration imposed a curfew in Ghundai, Godar, TD-Bazaar, Sor Qamar and Bhagyari check post areas without any prior information.

Mehsud said the curfew was imposed in the early hours of Saturday and since residents were unaware they began leaving their houses in the morning and 60 were subsequently arrested. However, some were released after they were found innocent during interrogation.

Mehsud added several culprits wanted by the political administration were also nabbed.

“The curfew was relaxed for students since a Bachelors of Arts exam was scheduled for the day,” said Mehsud.

The curfew was lifted at 2pm instead of the scheduled 5pm because of the residents’ cooperation, added Mehsud. No untoward incident was reported during the curfew, claimed the APA.

On June 12, three khasadar officials were shot dead in Jamrud tehsil and a local elder of the Awami National Party was also gunned down.
