PESHAWAR:

Adding to the staggering number of polio cases in Pakistan, the polio virology laboratory has confirmed four new polio cases on Friday, two each from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). With the latest cases, the total number has risen to 74 so far this year.

Madeena, the 42-month-old daughter of Sanaullah of Mama Khel village in Bannu, and Haleema, the 18-month-daughter of Abdul Malik from Mitha Khel, also in Bannu, were diagnosed with the crippling disease.

Two cases were also confirmed from North Waziristan Agency. Laiba, the 22-month-old daughter of Amanullah of Machas, Miramshah, and 23-month-old Alyas, son of Sher Adat of Khazar Khel, Miramshah, were also diagnosed with poliovirus.

In North and South Waziristan agencies, anti-polio immunisation drives have not been conducted since June 2012. Therefore, children have not received doses of polio vaccines.

Most of the polio cases are from Fata, with 48 from North Waziristan, five from South Waziristan, two from Khyber Agency, and two from Frontier Region (FR) Bannu.

In K-P, the total number of cases is now 11, in which Peshawar has the share of four cases, while the total number in Bannu has reached seven. Six cases have been also reported from Karachi.
