The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) simultaneously boycotted the National Assembly and the Senate on Wednesday in protest against spiralling prices and power cuts in Karachi.
This was the party’s third ‘disappearance’ from the parliament in as many days, triggering rumours about its commitment to a fragile political coalition at the centre and in Sindh. Unlike at previous sittings, lawmakers from the party did not return to both houses on Wednesday, making it a full-fledged boycott after two days of symbolic walkouts.
Observers say the MQM’s move may be part of a consistent campaign by the groups to pile up pressure on the government to strengthen its position in reconciliation dialogue.
