KARACHI: A new polio case surfaced on Thursday, taking the total number of cases to six in the province so far this year.

The crippling virus was confirmed in two-year-old girl Malala, the daughter of Nazir Hussain.

The family, hailing from the tribal areas, is settled in SITE Town, which is one of the most-sensitive areas declared by the authorities. It has yet to be confirmed whether the girl had ever taken polio drops.

The project director for the provincial Extended Programme on Immunisation, Dr Mazhar Khamisani, was unavailable for sharing details of the new case.

Sources said that the laboratory confirmation report had been received by the authorities on Thursday.
