KARACHI:
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Thursday and ordered confiscation of all his property in a case pertaining to murder of a Rangers official.
The ATC-IV sentenced Jahangir Bengali after he was found guilty of killing a Rangers official, Muhammad Faheem Akhtar, near Bilal Colony in 2010. The court acquitted two of his accomplices, Rasheed Bengali and Abbas Bengali, due to a lack of evidence. Another suspect, Yousuf Bengali, remained at large throughout the case.
According to the prosecution, Jahangir and his accomplices were accused of shooting at the Rangers officials, killing him on the spot. The prosecution added that the suspects tried to escape under the cover of gunfire but the Rangers managed to arrest Jahangir.
Anandram Sairani of the ATC-IV pronounced the verdict after recording evidence from both sides. Rasheed and Abbas, who were on bail, were acquitted of charges while the accused was remanded back to the police to serve the sentence.
