A second chance: 69 ex-militants released after rehabilitation

Governor advises graduates to be loyal to Pakistan and its people.

MINGORA: Sixty nine men incarcerated for militancy by the army after various operations in Swat were released from Mashal Rehabilitation Centre, Gulibagh on Tuesday.

A ceremony was held at the centre and Khyber-Pakhtunkwa (K-P) Governor Mehtab Abbasi was the chief guest.

The ex-militants, now believed to be ‘rehabilitated’, took an oath denouncing terrorist activities and promising to be law-abiding citizens. They also said that they would support the Pakistan Army and the writ of the state in the future.

Vowing never to repeat the mistakes of the past, they sang national songs, performed skits and gave speeches to prove their patriotism and loyalty,

While addressing the audience on the occasion, Abbasi said he was happy that peace was restored in Swat. He cited the sacrifices made by the Pakistan Army and residents as the contributing factors to peace.

He directly addressed the rehabilitated men and advised them to be loyal to Pakistan and its people. They should dedicate their lives to serving their country, he added.

The governor also visited the Swat Bar Association on the same day. While addressing a gathering, he said establishing peace was important for the development of the country.

He expressed his appreciation for the role of the media and lawyers in the restoration of democracy in the country. Later he announced a Rs2 million grant for the lawyers association, while the adviser to Prime Minister, Amir Muqam, also announced Rs300,000 on the occasion.
