LAHORE:
An additional district and sessions judge has fixed May 31 for the framing of charges against a man accused of raping a girl taken to him for exorcising demons believed to be tormenting her.
Petitioner Shazia Bibi said in March, her daughter had been puking blood and her health was rapidly deteriorating.
She said that she took her to Jinnah Hospital, Services Hospital and Shaikh Zaid Hospital for treatment but the doctors could not figure out what was wrong her. They said it appeared that she had a stomach ailment but couldn’t do much to help her. “One of the doctors told me to take my daughter to a spiritual leader...I asked my sister and she told me about Baba Ghulam Rasool,” Shazia Bibi said.
She said the baba visited her house and told her that he would have to stay the night in her daughter’s bedroom where he would chant prayers. She said she agreed but in the morning found her daughter lying unconscious in her bed.
She said Baba Ghulam Rasool said she would regain consciousness in a bit and her health would be completely restored.
“When my daughter came to, she revealed that she had been raped. She said he had threatened to kill her if she made a noise.”
Shazia Bibi filed a complaint against the pir under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code (rape). The police arrested him and submitted a challan before the court declaring him guilty of the offence. He is presently in police custody.
