Party workers: MQM slates ‘extrajudicial killings’
The party was supposed to hold a press conference later in the day regarding the issue but postponed it.
KARACHI:
Leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) called for an end to ‘extrajudicial killings’ and registration of FIRs against those involved. “Many party workers are being picked up illegally by law enforcement agencies,” said Dr Farooq Sattar on Monday. “They are not being produced in courts and instead their tortured bodies are found, dumped across the city.” The party leader was speaking to the media at the funeral of 45-year-old Ashfaq Qureshi, whose body was found in Boat Basin on Sunday. According to the MQM, Qureshi and three other activists were picked up by the police dressed in plainclothes from Bhittaiabad on May 18. The other three men were also brutally tortured, but were released a day later at an unidentified location. The party was supposed to hold a press conference later in the day regarding the issue but postponed it. Meanwhile, Additional IGP Ghulam Qadir Thebo has formed an inquiry team under the direct supervision of DIG South Abdul Khaliq Shaikh to investigate the matter and arrest criminals.
