KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) sent on Monday a suspect to jail on judicial custody remand for three days in connection with the Tahir Plaza arson attack case.

The ATC-III sent the suspect, Abdul Qadir, to jail with directions to the investigation officer to submit the final report in the case.

The investigation officer told the court that an eyewitness had failed to identify Qadir during an identification parade held before a judicial magistrate on Friday. The IO sought time to submit the final report in the case, to which the court allowed three days’ time.

According to the prosecution, advocate Altaf Abbasi and five others were burnt to death at their office in Tahir Plaza near the city courts, when the building that mostly housed lawyers’ offices, was set ablaze on April 9, 2008. The police had booked Qadir for his alleged involvement in the incident.

The police said that the suspect was arrested in a murder case registered at Arambagh police station and had disclosed his involvement in the current case during interrogation conducted by a joint investigation team.

A case, No 78/08, under Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage), 324 (attempted murder), 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, was registered at the Risala police station.
