KARACHI: Despite the inclusion of Sohail Abbas in the squad for the Asian Games, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is not hopeful of getting the organisers’ approval for Abbas’ late entry into the squad.

An official confirmed that Abbas’ name is included in the squad due to be named soon.

“The selectors have already included his name for the Asian Games after receiving positive feedback from the coaches in the ongoing training camp,” the official told The Express Tribune.

Chief selector Hanif Khan also agreed that Abbas’ performance had been well received.

“Getting an approval for Abbas is not an issue. I’m sure he’ll get the go-ahead from the organisers if he’s selected,” said Khan.

However, PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa remains unconvinced of Abbas’ clearance. “We’ll meet the Pakistan Olympic Association officials today to seek their assistance, but it seems difficult because organisers of events like the Asian Games are very strict regarding the rules,” said Bajwa.

According to reports, the Asian Games organisers have refused to issue accreditations of Abbas and baseball player Mohammad Usman as their applications were sent late.

Confusion prevails over squad delay

Lack of communication between the PHF officials and the selection committee has resulted in different dates being announced for squad naming.

“The announcement has been delayed because of non-availability of one of our selectors,” said Khan. However, Bajwa said the team will be announced on Tuesday. “The team will be named on Tuesday as we have to sort out some matters,” said Bajwa, who added that the selectors have already shortlisted 20 players after trials in the ongoing camp.
