Taking a leaf from the aesthetics of civilisations past, and employing them in a contemporary manner towards a visually appealing end can be a tricky job. Yet Nadeem Bashir, a multifaceted artist-designer, succeeds beautifully at bringing together the romance of Oriental design and stylish accent furniture in his collection.
Titled “The Spice Box”, the collection features 22 consoles, drawer units, wall mirrors and side boards using sheesham (Indian Rosewood) opens today (Friday) at Gallery 6.
Embodying a visually rich, yet crisp aesthetic, Bashir’s art pieces incorporate clean lines, graceful proportions and quality craftsmanship while keeping functionality in view. Bashir’s philosophy of crafting furniture requires the final products to be unique, well-built, sturdy yet dated- encapsulating the echoes and whispers of a life well-lived, and shadows of the past morphing elegantly into the future. The results are beautiful, soulful objects.
Bashir, who earned his post-graduate degree in design from the College of Fine Arts at University of New South Wales, has a diverse portfolio and is currently the head of Department of Communication Design at The National College of Arts Lahore, where he has taught since 1993. His private practice as a design consultant involves designing and exhibiting collections of furniture and accessories.
Remarking on the painstaking design process behind his pieces, Bashir says, “Immense effort has been done to come up with a sleek and smart structure, which does not require much space and incorporates highly decorative elements in it.”
The exhibition will continue until Sunday.
