The Islamabad Capital Territory administration is set to launch seven new water supply schemes and upgrade three existing ones to ensure provision of potable water in the capital.

According to the Ministry of Interior on Tuesday, the proposal for installation of new water supply schemes and rehabilitation of existing ones will cost Rs1,013 billion.

Two ongoing schemes will be completed as well, for which Rs276,421 million have been allocated in the Public Sector Development Programme(PSDP) and are being released on a quarterly basis.

In the last five years, five new water supply schemes have been completed, whereas eight water supply schemes were upgraded for Rs439,974 million. In addition, small water supply projects, such as hand pumps have been installed. In several villages, water has been made available through boring.

Around 0.7million people residing in 133 villages in the capital’s suburbs have access to clean drinking water. Out of a total number of 65 villages and towns with water supply schemes in rural areas, they are functional in only 48 villages.
