Police raided various garment shops here on Thursday against the alleged filming of female customers through hidden cameras fixed in changing rooms.
Traders reacted instantly and closed their businesses and took to the streets against the police raids.
The police swung into action following a report published in a local newspaper about filming of women shoppers through hidden cameras fixed in changing rooms of various shops. As the raids were under way, the traders closed their shops and gathered at Geelani Chowk and blocked the Muzaffarabad-Rawalpindi road for more than two hours.
As a result of the protest, long queues of stranded vehicles could be seen from Domail to Aziz Chowk.
“We are not against the police raids but the way they are being conducted is unacceptable.
“If the police have the information about the hidden cameras at shops, they should bring it to the notice of traders’ representatives. We will expel guilty shopkeepers from the market if it is proved,” said Shoukat Nawaz, traders’ association president.
“If the police have seized video recordings from hidden cameras, they should share them with the media and traders’ representatives.”
Muzaffarabad Assistant Commissioner Asim Khalid Awan told The Express Tribune that they had information about hidden cameras installed in changing rooms and they were trying to hunt down the perpetrators. “We will share details with the media later.”
Meanwhile, journalists in Muzaffarabad have decided to boycott events and functions of traders, after the traders used foul language against journalists who were covering the protest.

@anarchist: wow what a justification, by the way when it comes to voyeurism Japanese appear to be ahead of others light years so what's your justification about that??
Sexually Furstrated People ! , going to all means ! , what do they want that now women should not do shopping even ??
Sick Minds ! , these things will not change in one go , there has to be continued effort to eliminate this mindset from the society !
the traders association should be hanged.
Shame on them.
Well I appreciate that the local police has taken some actions towards this hideous practice. However if this happens everywhere, awareness should be spread to women so that atleast they can be careful about this.
Shameful act! All garment shops in major cities should be checked to avoid such play with personal privacy!
The only shame is to have none. Pascal
and they don't have any, be aware sisters.
This is a common practice in all ladies shops. I wonder why no action is being taken against the shop owner. And women also fail to take notice.
It's good that the police and concerned authorities are taking actions. That's great! Seems to me local authorities and regulatory bodies are doing some bits, if not all, of their work. I agree, to some end, with what Shoukat Nawaz, president of the trader's association has to say. Yes, bring it to the authorities notice, but I'd think again before sharing such things with the media. If one has stumbled upon some vices, what's the best thing to do??? Project it to the masses, or chose a select group to review the content and then decide on a suitable course of action? I think we, the people, from all walks of life, need to CRITICALLY THINK about our actions and decisions. How and what impacts it would have on the different economic classes of our society. Introducing something to the mainstream media means telling the world what's going on in my home. What will I achieve as a result of doing my dirt laundry in public. Here the mainstream media being the PUBLIC, and my country bring my home. I'd really appreciate if our people literally thought of our country as our home, our nation as our family, and then decide and choose. A simple analogy that might help, and it is also the jist of a Hadees, origins of which I don't know now; Always give someone a gift, that you would yourself like to receive. Don't give a gift as a mere formality.
“If the police have seized video recordings from hidden cameras, they should share them with the media and traders’ representatives.”
