Former Pakistani ambassador to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, lambasted the Sindh government for negligence in Tharparkar at a press conference on Tuesday.
"Over the past six months, the media has been constantly carried reports of scarcity of food and water in areas from Badin to Ghotki," said Haroon. He lamented that no one had cared for the news and the deaths of peacocks, which were dying from hunger and thirst, was blamed on a viral disease.
"From the birds, the famine went on to affect the animals in Tharparkar and then subsequently started causing deaths of minor children. The Sindh government is, however, adamant that the news of children's deaths were false." Haroon reported that the government had given 600 sacks of wheat to the 150,000-strong population of the drought-wrecked district.
Jeay Sindh Mahaz chairperson Riaz Chandio who was also at the press conference, demanded the Supreme Court order registration of an FIR against officials of the Sindh government and the provincial chief minister. "People are helplessly waiting for their deaths while corruption remains the same. The officials are looting the relief goods meant for the affectees," said Chandio.
