Power struggle: WAPDA dues reach Rs325b
Qesco default totals Rs90 billion.

The National Assembly was informed on Friday that the total outstanding amount owed by Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) to private distribution companies has notched up to Rs325 billion as of January this year.
The Ministry of Water and Power responded to a question forwarded by MNA Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho in lower house of the parliament, saying defaulters include the electricity supply companies in Lahore (Lesco), Gujranwala (Gepco), Faisalabad (Fesco), Islamabad (Iesco), Multan (Mepco), Peshawar (Pesco), the tribal areas (Tesco), Hyderabad (Hesco), Sukkur (Sepco) and Quetta (Qesco).
While QESCO owes the greatest amount in the group – Rs90.15 billion – the amount owed by the other companies are as follows: Lesco has defaulted on Rs31.234 billion, Gepco by Rs6.342 billion, Pesco by Rs8.161 billion, Iesco by Rs2.414 billion, Mepco by Rs28.059 billion, Tesco by Rs38.172 billion and Sepco by Rs45.842 billion.
The ministry stated that the notices have been issued to the defaulters and a special recovery team has been constituted to ensure payments.
Additionally, the ministry stated that the total payable circular debt as of February 25 this year is Rs242.7 billion.
Kishenganga case
The ministry of water and power informed the house that Rs576 million has been incurred in expenses in the Kishenganga court case. Of this amount, Rs95 million was paid to local and foreign lawyers pursuing the case in the Court of Arbitration.
The ministry stated that three foreign lawyers - Professor James Crawford, Professor Samuel Wordsworth and Professor Vaughan – who are experts in the field of international law and arbitration, are engaged in the case. Local lawyers include Sharmila Mahmood and Faisal Hussain Naqvi, the ministry said.
