Interest: PIA receives bids for aircraft lease

Qatar Aviation Lease Company and KL Aero Parts submitted bids for Airbus 320 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Friday received bids from two companies for the lease of narrow-body aircraft in the presence of journalists, the airline said in a statement.


Qatar Aviation Lease Company and KL Aero Parts submitted bids for Airbus 320 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Qatar Aviation’s bid included eight A320 aircraft. Four of the aircraft were manufactured in 2011 while remaining in 2012. KL Aero Parts offered 10 A320s and 10 737-800 aircraft of 2014 make.

“The bidders have committed delivery by last week of July,” it said, adding the management will make a recommendation to the board of directors in 10 days.

“Financing of these aircraft will be done from PIA’s
own resources and partially with the help of the government.”

It's indeed astonishing that only two companies put in the bids. Moreover, the bids are not comparable. Qatar Aviation has offered aircrafts manufactured in 2011 and 2012 while the KL Aero has offered aircrafts made in 2014.

It's also hard to understand as to how the financing of these aircrafts can be partially done by PIA whose equity has been wiped out and the accumulated losses run into Rs 185 billions.

It has been reported in a section of the media that the Qatar Aviation is most likely to be awarded the contract.

Qatar Air will be happy to let go of their fleet since they d be getting A-380. How much commission can one get?
