Jatoi’s relatives sent on physical remand
A relative of former federal minister Liaquat Jatoi has been sent to jail on physical remand after the nephews of well known stockbroker Aqeel Karim Dhedhi accused him of motivating his sons to attack them.
Chaakar Khan Shahani and Sadaqat Jatoi were arrested from Jamshoro late Monday night. The Clifton police presented Shahani in the court of judicial magistrate South Adam Sanghar on Tuesday morning to request physical remand for two weeks. Jatoi was released. The case Two men - Ali Shah, who is a friend of Aqeel Karim Dhedhi’s nephews, and his security guard - were killed and Faizan and Akbar Dhedhi were injured in block VIII, Clifton on Saturday.
The Dhedhis maintained that it was an attempt to kidnap Akbar. They identified as their alleged attackers five men - Saifullah Warraich, Pir Mohammad Shahani and Nadir Mohammad, who are sons of Chaakar Khan Shahahi. They also named security guards Waheed Rajar, Mobeen and Manoj.
The guards were arrested in late-night raids and Chaakar Khan Shahani’s sons have yet to be arrested. The Dhedhis lodged FIR No. 120/2010 at Clifton. In the lower court The injured Faizan Dhedhi, who was at Aga Khan University Hospital, told the police that Chaakar Khan Shahani “motivated” the alleged attack.
On Tuesday morning, Investigation Officer Sabz Ali Khan informed the lower court that Shahani had been arrested in the light of this statement and that Shahani’s name would later be included in the challan. The magistrate physically remanded Shahani into police custody for further investigations till April 17. “[Shahani] motivated the criminals and dropped them at the spot of the killing,” said Investigation Officer Sabz Ali Khan while quoting from the recorded statement.
In the Sindh Hgh Court For their part, Chaakar Khan Shahani and Sadaqat Jatoi filed a petition in the Sindh High Court. Their lawyer submitted that the Karachi police arrested them on April 12 in connection with the kidnapping and murder attempt on Dhedhi’s nephew Akbar Dhedhi. Their lawyer, Wazir Hussain Khoso said that there was no evidence to connect Shahani with the crime in question and thus he was requesting post-arrest bail. Khoso argued that the court had the right to issue post-arrest bail for people in police custody. The Sindh High Court then ordered the police to investigate the case and adjourned the matter till Wednesday 9 am.
