As many as 250 paintings and sculptures by 150 artists from across the country were displayed at the opening day of the 28th annual exhibition of the Artists Association of the Punjab on Wednesday at the Alhamra Art Gallery.


The exhibition was inaugurated by writer Intezar Hussain.

Speaking on the occasion, Hussain said that it was an honour to open some of the best art Pakistani artists had to offer.

Works of Mian Ijazul Hassan, Rahat Naveed Masud, Amna Pataudi, Quddus Mirza, RM Naeem, Rahat Ghulam Mustafa, Musarrat Hassan, Zufikhar Ali Zulfi, Maliha Azmi Agha, Kehkashan Jafri, Ali Azmat, Mughees Riaz, Aftab Zafar, Jameel Baloch, Abdul Hameed Baloch Baloch, Hira Mustafa and Jahanzeb Malik are among the displays.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Quddus Mirza, said, “The exhibition shows the diversity in Pakistani art. The art on display experiments in themes and techniques.”

Hira Mustafa said, “My work is a critique of the importance of art and education.” She said she had portrayed her books in miniature paintings.

Amna Pataudi said her paintings explored the idea of hope in times of tragedy.

“On one hand, I tried to show pain and suffering. On the other, I depicted the hope that emerges from such a situation.”

Artists Association Chairman Mian Ijazul Hassan said a wide range of work was on display.

“There are several interesting points of view. Calligraphy, traditional and modern miniatures, perceptual and conceptual works and multifaceted modernist and post modernist endeavours are all on display,” he said.

The exhibition will continue till February 15.

Seminar

The Artists Association in collaboration and the Pakistan National Council of Arts are organising a seminar on Crisis of Culture at Alhamra Hall III on Thursday (today). Attaul Haq Qasmi, chairman of the Lahore Arts Council and Professor Mujahid Kamran Vice chancellor, University of the Punjab vice chancellor, will be the chief guests.
