Sentenced: Cop’s killer awarded death

Anti Terrorism Court Judge Ishtiaq Ahmad on Wednesday awarded death penalty on two counts to a man found guilty of killing an assisted sub-inspector of the Bahlak police station. The ASI was shot during a police-criminal shootout. According to the prosecution, Zaheer Wattoo, a resident of Chak 609-GB, was wanted by Sahiwal police for a robbery. Police had raided his house on April 7, 2012 on a tip-off. He had shot at the police team, killing ASI Mazhar Hussain on the spot. A police volunteer, Muhammad Arshad, was injured and hospitalised. On Wednesday, the judge found Wattoo guilty and awarded him capital punishment under Section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code. He also ordered the convict to pay Rs200,000 to the bereaved family. The judge awarded a second count of death sentence under Section 7 of the Anti Terrorism Act and ordered him to pay another Rs200,000 fine. The convict was also sentenced to six-and-a-half-year rigorous imprisonment.
