Designer clutches that standout from the crowd.

Designer clutches that standout from the crowd.

KARACHI:

Flick through the people pages of any high-end Pakistani magazine and you’ll see how much society ladies love statement-making bags. Despite the multitude of designers out there, you’ll undoubtedly see the same crop of Birkins, Bottega knot clutches, Chanel 2.55s and LV Neverfulls. A few other bags have become wildly popular, particularly in label-mad Lahore, namely the Prada Saffiano, the McQueen knuckleduster and the Chanel boy bag.

The Prada Saffiano, The Chanel 2.55

Whilst these bags are gorgeous in themselves, it’s a bit disconcerting to see them on everyone from newlyweds to seemingly ageless aunties. The Chanel 2.55 in particular has always struck me as somewhat of a mumsy bag, yet uber-rich newlyweds have been known to buy them in several colours. If you really are going to spend eye-watering amounts on handbags, maybe it’s time to branch out a little.

The McQueen Knuckleduster, The classic Bottega knot

As far as clutches go, Bottega and Alexander McQueen seem to be the only two designers anyone in Pakistan ever seems to consider. If you must buy a Bottega, at least go for an elongated Knot clutch instead of the ubiquitous smaller minaudiere. There are many beautiful edgy Mcqueen clutches in the skull and knuckleduster ranges, but considering how so many people are carrying the same bags, why not go for some different designers?  Here’s a small selection of what’s out there.

Marchesa is one designer that makes clutches that are perfect for formal eastern wear. Their extravagant embroidered minaudieres with the signature quartz crystal clasp are just the thing to carry with elaborate eastern formals.
