ISLAMABAD:

Senior lawyer Salman Aslam Butt has been tipped to replace Munir A Malik as the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP). The government took the decision after Malik stepped down citing personal reasons, officials told The Express Tribune.

Munir A Malik, who formally resigned on Thursday, was appointed AGP soon after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz came to power as a result of the May 11, 2013 elections. Some officials claim Malik developed differences with the government with regard to cases being heard in the apex court.

“Salman Aslam Butt is believed to be a close aide to the prime minister and has had important input in various cases the government is facing in the court,” a law ministry official told The Express Tribune.

The official said the summary of Butt’s appointment has been prepared and sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. It would be routed to the Presidency for approval within 48 hours, he added.

When contacted, Butt said he has been unofficially notified of the development through some ‘friends’ and a meeting with the prime minister is on the books.

Munir A Malik, a senior lawyer, was the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) when lawyers launched a movement for the restoration of dozens of superior court judges sacked by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
