“I will not request pardon [if convicted]… I will not opt for any solution which creates an impression that I acted out of fear,” he said in an exclusive interview with Moeed Peerzada for Express News on Sunday.
“I have no regrets… I came back to Pakistan to face cases against me and because people wanted change,” he said.
In the same breath, however, the former president said he did not expect to be charged with high treason. “Yes, you can say it was my misjudgment… I did not expect Article 6 would be thrown at me.”
Musharraf expressed regret that recently retired army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani did not support him in the face of treason charges.
“He [Kayani] was kept in the loop in pretty much all consultations – from those pertaining to internal matters to the Middle East – and he should have submitted an affidavit during proceedings of the Iftikhar Chaudhry case,” he said. “This is something he should be asked to explain.”
Speaking to reporters outside his farmhouse earlier in the day, Musharraf denounced the treason charges against him as a ‘vendetta’ and claimed he had the backing of the army in the case.
“I would say the whole army is upset. I have led the army from the front,” he said. “I have no doubt with the feedback that I received that the whole army is... totally with me on this issue.”
He said he had no objection to defending himself before a ‘fair tribunal or court’ but admitted he was not optimistic about the special panel convened to hear his case.
“The way this tribunal was formed, which involved the prime minister and the ex-chief justice, this itself smacks a little bit of a vendetta.”
Talking to Express News, Musharraf said it was strange that despite being the one ‘grieved’ by his October 12 actions, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had so far shown no interest in pursuing treason charges against him.
“He (Nawaz) is probably avoiding it because it may open a Pandora’s box for him… I was onboard a flight at the time and the action was taken on the ground,” he said.
Asked if it was improper for an elected prime minister and his colleagues to be sent to jail by the army, Musharraf replied: “Is it not improper that a flight carrying the country’s army chief is told it cannot land in Pakistan and instructed to land in India instead.”
He also refuted allegations that Nawaz and his colleagues were mistreated by the army.
“Frankly speaking, Nawaz Sharif was provided good food and all facilities in Attock Fort, and he was later shifted to an army mess… The people did not face any hardship.”
He added that the nation should not have to suffer from a ‘personal vendetta’ against the former army chief.
Justifying the state of emergency he imposed on November 3, 2007, Musharraf said he took the action in the interest of the country.
“September 11 and November 3 were the most testing times for Pakistan… The former could have led to military action against Pakistan and by the latter date, the country was heading towards a ruined economy and failure as a state.” He also accused the judiciary of ‘freeing terrorists’ at the time.
“I took the [November 3] action following a request by [then] prime minister Shaukat Aziz.” He evaded a question about who he consulted while promulgating the state of emergency, saying “everything is mentioned in the promulgation order.”
Talking about his resignation as president, Musharraf denied that the move was prompted by pressure from the judiciary.
“Yes, it was likely that I could be impeached, but I did not resign because of anything [then] chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry did,” he said, adding, “I did not want to serve as a useless president.”
Musharraf said he launched the Lal Masjid operation after being incited by a journalist at a National Defence University event. He said although he did not regret supporting a strong media, his only complaint was that some people in the industry were ‘trying to prove a wrong thing right’.
Musharraf lashes out at Zardari
Responding to a recent statement by former president Asif Ali Zardari, Musharraf said people should look into who benefitted the most from Benazir Bhutto’s death.
In his speech at an event commemorating the death of Benazir Bhutto on Friday, Zardari – while referring to Musharraf as a ‘tomcat’ – said: “A tomcat has been trapped today and should not be allowed to go free.”
Zardari also said the military had benefitted from tussles between politicians.
“Which ‘tomcat’ drank the most milk after Benazir’s death… that is the question to be considered,” Musharraf said in his interview with Express News. He accused Zardari of trying to orchestrate a confrontation between the government and the military.
On Nawaz’s offer
Referring to Prime Minister Nawaz’s offer to airlift his ailing mother to Pakistan, Musharraf said he would not ask the government to do anything.
“I know how to take care of my mother… whatever I do, I shall do so on my own… I will not beg the government for anything.”

According to my considered opinion,A secret game is being played on the high peak. It is not understandable to the common minde. Please think for a while,Prime minister was not in favoure of trial or treason trial it has been expressed by him on different occasions.
In fact, some concerned quarters, operating underway wante to make the general an Icon of power in the future, because they know dictatorship has disappeared from the land who will carry on the agenda who will worke as a western hand in the region of subcontinent.
He is being made as hero and the tool by which power gaining mechanism can be settled.According to them Nawaz and Imran policies are unacceptable one has blocked and blocking supply lines and second is talking about national consensus on every matter and opposing drone strike which has proved vital weapon of the west against Afghan freedom fighter.
@Vortex: Thanks for your reply. This is my two cent to your comment. If he was highly paid speakers as you said then did he show in his tax return ? By the way the palace next to Islamabad was built before he became speaker. I still stick to my point of view that he is corrupt unless he releases his last fourteen yrs tax returns. Only tax returns can prove me wrong. Nobody can accumulate Rs 625 million( 65 crore rupees) just from payment of army chief and president. Do you know how much those posts are paid? So bottom line is we are dealing with corrupt ex-army chief and ex president. If you are his next door neighbor, tell him to come out clean he has to release his tax return.thanks
@Aysha M: Can you please tell us how he accumulated Rs 625 million net worth? This was the amount he declared himself at the time of election. IArmy chief and the president is not paid that much, even if he was drawing two pays at one time. This does not include his foreign accounts and foreign properties . I have written more than once, can he release his last fourteen yrs tax returns. You seem to be one of his supporters . May be you have more influence than me. I am run of the mill guy on the street. I think he is corrupt like any other politicians in Pakistan unless proven other wise (by declaring their tax return. That is the litmus test). In USA, all the politicians declare their tax returns for the last few yrs, if they are candidate for parliament or local assembly seat or Governor or President. We can always learn good things from the West.. You still think he is honest?I will take my answer on this website. Thanks in advance.
@AAK: Man of dignity. When he assumed power, he publicly gave a promise that he will resign from the Army [i.e. drop his uniform and become a civilian.] He signed an agreement and as a dishonest man, he kept his uniform till the last when he was forced to flee the country. His conduct and behavior is a blot on the name of Pakistan Army. Most important of all is that he should be taken to task for violating the constitution and usurping power.
@naeem khan Manhattan,Ks: If I remember correctly once there was a reference under trial agains CJ Choudry in 2007 for misusing of powers,, the CJ also politicized the issue by addressing public gatherings, and bar councils alongwith his driver Aitizaz Hussain. If it is unconstitutional for Musharaf it, it was unconstitutional for choudry as well for holding rallies once under trial. Secondly he is still not covicted for breaching the constitution, he is trialed for holding constitution in abyence,, an action which the then NA supported and applauded. Howcome constitution was breached once NA was working... I am confused
A man of his words. I truly admire the army institution that produces such men. What a brave and fair stance. Never ever will this guy bow before criminals. His only offence is his strive for the progress of Pakistan. Everyone has the history of supporting dictators and being a part of dictatorship and attacking supreme court like Nawaz Sharif.
"Pervez Musharraf on Sunday ruled out any request for clemency if he is convicted of treason"
I thought treason is not a pardonable offence
As it is said, fight like a cornered cat and that is exactly what Musharraf is doing in the present case. As far as the legal position in the treason case is concerned, it looks almost untenable. Nevertheless, the General would certainly be hoping for some kind of help from his own military or some friendly country to save him from this hopeless position..
Musharraf will not request for pardon
Lineage talking, where honesty and integrity is valued much more than wealth
To all the detractors of Musharraf venting their personal biases here , just watch all the TV interviews going on instead of succumbing to disinformation of paid print media.
If you have a any honesty and concsience , truth will hit you in the face that this show trial is preengineered and Cyclop Caudhry and NS are behind it
But Allah knows al and sees all so Musharraf has nothing to worry about
@SHB: You persist in making this comment. He is one the highest paid speakers in the world lecture circuit raising Pakistan's esteem in the International community. One appearance nets 150K to 200K dollars.
Pardon or no pardon, Musharraf remains a Hero. The least worst of all the options that we have.
The Constitution is for all. Any one who breaks the comand of the constitution should be punished according to law.
Yes ...It's a clear ,massage to the enemies of Pakistan .
Bravo I personally salute you .
With all due respect , can he tell us how his net worth reached Rs 625 million ? If he is so honest, can he make public, his tax returns for the last 14 yrs? How did he buy his properties in London, UK?
Musharraf is a brave man. Maybe he has learnt from his mistakes. Salams
As usual like fraud judges ,Express Tribune a bias News Paper not going to display my comments. Musharraf is the Man of Dignity What he says he does, he damn care his personal interest on Pakistan .
Musharraf is a great man and always stand by on his words !
Gen Mush is fearful and delusional. He never thought he would be tried under article 6 because for generals committing high treason has been a game and they thought they can always get away with that. The world has changed from Latin America to Indonesia to Turkey and Pakistan would not be reverted to Egypt. There are petty crimes like theft and corruption then there are crimes that carry certain death like multiple murders and high treason.
Commando its good for you stay in the farm house and enjoy security of 1200 heavily armed men; If they let you go in the public its dangerous for you accept the decision of punishment as there is no other choice if you left the country enemy will say commando COAS ran out. Play Golf and enjoy life which is too short
Confident as always. I like the way he is facing all charges alone and the rest have been disappeared or backed out form their wrong-doing during Mushrraf's Presidency. Those wre onboard and had enjoyed political fruit shouldnt they be bookd?
How the heck he is being allowed to be interviewed, he is going under trial for treason and he is being asked questions which should not be asked since the case is in the court. If he has to say anything, he should tell the court and not instigating the public and the Army. It is time that Armed Forces respect the constitution of the country and keep distance from this guy who has has already admitted on BBC that he has violated the constitution and now he is trying to hoodwink the people. I will say to Musharraf that he should Face the music now instead of blaming every one around him. Some how he is not the man he portrayed himself to be, cowards are done a dozen in Pakistan. Yes, that coward prime minister of his should also be indicted and brought to Pakistan to face the law. His assertion that Americans were going to attack Pakistan after 9/11 is erroneous accusation or excuse for his mishandling and failings, Pakistanis had nothing to do with 9/11, they were all Arabs and Americans should have dealt with them.
You are the man !! Stick to your ground.
Musharaff should do some smartness and beg apology for overthrowing civilian govt before its too late.Turkey may play important role.Things are not in his favour.
Musharraf Must not be pardoned, InshaAllah will not be pardoned
