‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve slams ‘Star Wars’ for losing creativity after 1983

Denis Villeneuve dismisses directing ‘Star Wars,’ calling the franchise codified and uninspiring since 1983.’

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has clarified why he has no interest in directing a ‘Star Wars’ movie, citing the franchise’s shift in tone and lack of creativity since 1983’s ‘Return of the Jedi.’ 

Speaking on The Town podcast, the ‘Dune’ director recalled being a passionate fan of the first two films, calling them “obsessions,” but said his enthusiasm waned with the third installment.

Villeneuve criticized ‘Return of the Jedi’ for introducing the Ewoks, saying, “It turned out to be a comedy for kids.” He explained that the franchise became “crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic,” which removed the element of surprise. “Star Wars feels very codified now,” he added, confirming he has no desire to take on the iconic space opera.

The director also dismissed the idea of directing for streaming platforms like Netflix, emphasizing the importance of the theatrical experience. “The big screen is part of the language. We’re not meant to be alone; we’re meant to share together,” he said.

Although Villeneuve hinted at the possibility of a ‘Dune 3,’ he expressed a preference for creating unique, standalone films over committing to franchises.
